First settled in 1669, West Tisbury wasn’t incorporated until 1892 and was, in fact, the last town on Martha’s Vineyard to be incorporated. This scenic spot is home to a sizable portion of State Forest as well as stunning beaches, idyllic farmland, and historical structures, and it retains the rural atmosphere and close community ties of small-town life.
Estates here encompass the wild beauty of the rugged, rural landscape and often come with 20 or more acres of land, while the homes themselves can act like compounds, including multiple dwellings and picturesque settings. The architecture dates back to the 1700s and ranges from early American design to modern farmhouses. The bucolic landscape of West Tisbury makes for a stunning and peaceful retreat from the mainland world.

Dining, Entertainment, and Shopping
West Tisbury offers the understated elegance and strength of a well-made bag. Restaurants and shops here aren’t ostentatious, but they are top-notch. State Road Restaurant offers creative New American fare with a seasonal flair, and its rustic-chic dining room is cozy and comfortable. A true farm-to-table restaurant, 7a Foods serves breakfast and lunch straight from the farm. With a menu of baked goods, a daily frittata, farm-fresh salads, hearty soups, artisan sandwiches, and a variety of prepared foods, this is a West Tisbury go-to.
Alley’s General Store opened back in 1858 and, at the time, provided basic staples for homeowners and fishermen. Today it serves as a community gathering spot. Granary Gallery is an exciting art destination representing Island Artists alongside national, regional, and emerging talent.
Things to Do
One of the most iconic events on the island is the Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Fair. What began as a humble show of livestock has since become an Island tradition. This four-day old-fashioned country fair is held on the Agricultural Hall fairgrounds. The Vineyard Artisans Festival is the Island’s largest art show and features unique furniture, clothing, ceramics, jewelry, and fine art from the top artists on Martha’s Vineyard.
Rain or shine since 1974, the West Tisbury Farmers Market has offered the best that Martha’s Vineyard has to offer in organic produce, honey, flowers, pastries, fresh seafood, handmade clothing, spices, and even stationary.
For a day exploring the wilderness and water, take a visit to Long Point Wildlife Refuge or live like a naturist at the Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary, home to the habitats and vistas that make Martha’s Vineyard so unique. The Polly Hill Arboretum is a stunning horticultural and botanical landmark developed by legendary horticulturist Polly Hill. Stroll the grounds, take a course or even buy flowers at this storied institution.
